Janmastami

Janmashtami is the date and celebration of Krishna’s birth (also named Gokulashtami). Krishna is an avatar of the god Vishnu and his birthday is celebrated worldwide. Krishna is the god of love, compassion, tenderness and the celebration of his birthday is held on the eighth day of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Shraavana.

The representation of the destruction of evil and the importance of Dharma, Krishna is the 8th incarnation of Vishnu and is the physical representation of god. Vishnu becomes man when the world is consumed by evil and going through particularly hard and dark times. He comes in many different forms to save the world from its wickedness through love and compassion.

Camp Mandala is held on the days leading up to Janmashtami and campers are invited to stay an additional day for the festivities! August 23 is the date this year that Krishna’s birthday happens to fall on - participation is optional, but we encourage all campers to stay, celebrate, learn about the culture and experience why Janmashtami is observed by billions of people around the world.
